Alternatives to Rings
When Proposing to Your Partner

The classic wedding proposal involves a ring, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s the only option. As a matter of fact, in recent times couples have been veering more and more towards modern options. If you’re interested in going against the grain and creating an extra-special memory with your beloved, check out the suggestions below for some thoroughly new alternatives to the standard ring proposal.

A Tattoo

This option might be a little much for some people. However, it’s certainly worth considering — and there’s a definite basis in recent history to back it up. The zeitgeist of tattoos is well and truly upon us, with some studies suggesting that 36% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 have at least one tattoo.

When it comes to using a tattoo as a method of expressing your love for your loved one in a proposal, the possibilities are quite literally endless. Common examples include (but are not limited to): some combination of your names, the date you two first met. If not, a special symbol that has sentimental importance for the pair of you. It doesn’t need to be anything flashy; even a small token will do, and since it’s permanent, what better way to suggest undying love?

A Down Payment

At first glance, you may well find nothing less romantic than something financial for a proposal. Don’t knock this one until you’ve given it some thought. Modern life is many things, but easy it is not. A lot of people are unpleasantly stressed about financial matters that were once taken for granted. From televisions right the way up to a property, there are plenty of purchases that could require a down payment. Keeping those in mind, the most commonly used one for a proposal is a house.

Getting that special someone a down payment for your proposal is an elegant way of expressing the commitment you feel towards them, and towards your relationship. It will definitely be a welcome addition to the bank account in question. At the same time, it’ll allow you two to move in together sooner than expected. You can really get your life started in earnest if that is the case.

Start an Adventure Fund

If you and your beloved are into travelling, making a donation into an adventure fund! This could be the perfect way to express just how strongly you feel about them. It doesn’t need to break the bank — it’s a symbolic gesture more than anything. It should be sufficient to pay for a couple of one-way flights to somewhere exciting. Nothing says romance quite like acknowledging that you want to go on the trip of a lifetime with them, and only them.

On the other hand, if travel isn’t quite your thing, why not spend the same amount of money on a fund for their hobby of choice? Think from model trains to painting. Even a token amount that could serve as the basis for some new equipment is guaranteed to make your special someone feel very special indeed. Get creative with it! At the same time, don’t forget to make sure it shows how thoroughly you understand them and approve of what they love to do.

Rings, tattoos, and down payments are all well and good. However, at the end of the day, they’re one form or other of social convention. Always remember that marriage isn’t about society — it’s about you and the person you love.

There’s no better way to express how much you love someone than by showing them you understand them inside and out. Many ideas might pop up if you are willing to take some time to think about it. Using something only the other person will understand is a guaranteed way to make a wedding proposal that much more special. Furthermore, it goes without saying that neither of you will forget the event in a hurry.
