Though it would not be easy to have a wedding in a real castle or a movie set, there is one place which makes you feel like a princess and a prince in Korea. Yongma Land, a small abandoned amusement park in Seoul, now welcomes whoever dreams of that ‘happily ever after’ marriage life for their most special day in their lifetime. Here is a story of a couple who had their unforgettable amusement park wedding in Yongma Land.
Meet Hyejin Ryu and Kidae Song, a couple with freewheeling spirits. They wanted their wedding to represent their characters themselves as well as entertain all their guests who came to celebrate their new chapter of life. Ryohan, a wedding director as well as Hyejin’s old friend, knew them more than anyone and came up with the idea of a carnival-like wedding at an amusement park in Seoul.
For their special day, Yongma Land was such an unbeatable venue. It is an amusement park which no longer operates as an amusement park but still embodies both nature and the funky style of rides, highlighting just how old this place is. With the combination of metallic rides and nature, it shows the different faces of the park depending on time and seasons. The day of this couple’s auspicious wedding was reminiscent of the park itself.
That one summer afternoon, while Heyjin and Kidae were waiting for the most important moment in their life, all of the guests travelled back to their innocent childhood in an old amusement park. No matter whether they were three-year-old girls or forty-eight year old grumpy men, they all enjoyed the summer sunshine with duck-shaped cotton candy in their hand.
Crowds were minding their businesses and having fun, until the wedding march started. Guests sitting on benches turned around and looked at the couple. The newlyweds radiated their excitement on their new journey to their new life together. Their families, friends and colleagues. who came for the celebrations warmly smiled and clapped, wishing happiness.
“Whenever I went to any small weddings, guests’ faces were different from what I could see from at traditional weddings. I could see that they really celebrated the couple’s new start from the bottom of the heart and I really loved it. Because of that, I did not want a formatted wedding,” Heyjin said.
After Hyejin and Kidae exchanged their sincere and touching vows, they sealed the deal with a dip-and-kiss!
The newlyweds made a dramatic exit. Furthermore, the presence of the merry-go-round seen at the back romantically seasoned the scene.
What makes this amusement park even more special as a wedding venue is this merry-go-round. This old but classic merry-go-round immediately brings you back to a fairytale. It makes you feel like a part of the story.
Show time! As the wedding ceremony ended, the merry-go-round lit up and the real festival began.
The newlyweds who dressed up like 1930s French movie stars, together with the lit up merry-go-round just seemed like a scene from the movie: Moulin Rouge. The small twinkle lights and red-colored flowers enriched the atmosphere of the reception like ‘Christmas in Summer’.
While the wedding ceremony focused on the couple, the reception was made with every single guest in mind. Guests shared their thoughts for the couple and even performed for the couple and guests. The barbeque food, beer and cocktails served at the food trucks made the night more enjoyable and entertaining. Guests were, after all, at an amusement park and this made their day.
The highlight of the night was the song sung by Kidae and Hyejin. This creative couple made their own song to celebrate and thanked the guests for coming.
Fun fact: The song is now available on music streaming sites!
Here are the bride and groom who just had a blissful union in front of their beloved people, who we believed had truly enjoyed the night.
Hyejin who has been a wedding planner and is now an illustrator for children’s book was reminded of one her planned weddings. She stated that “Yongma Land is such a romantic place even with only a merry-go-round. My wedding was the finale of my 10-year career as a wedding planner. We designed our invitations which featured an illustrated merry-go-round that popped up and even arranged the list of all wedding songs through the ceremony and reception. Hiring food trucks instead of having catering was also a great idea. Everybody who was there ate food all day, drank a lot and enjoyed dancing as well. Cotton candy was a treat as well! All my guests really had a great time, just as they would on a picnic.”
As Hyejin said, her ceremony was even more special because it was her very last project as a wedding planner, with her lifetime partner. Her colleagues and partners who are now old friends made her dream come true as a team. From time to time, while talking with a wedding director and checking the event, she did not lose her professionalism as a wedding specialist. Just like a movie. The last photoshoot of the team after the show ended.
Ryohan who directed the whole ceremony as well as MC’d it commented “this wedding was just like a festival for everyone who was there. Everybody there celebrated the beginning of this couple’s new life sincerely and enjoyed every moment.”
