Long known for its revered culinary offerings and world-famous chefs, of course, French weddings take the cake when it comes to food and here’s why! We’re pretty sure all the mentions of French wedding food will have you drooling.
So, what characteristics of a typical French wedding menu is it that has caught your eye? If it’s rich, punchy flavours you prefer or delicate soft notes, you are in safe hands.
Unless you are keen to go for a full gastronomic menu with a number of dishes in smaller sample portions, the traditional wedding meal has your typical starter, main dish and a dessert, seem pretty basic? Think again.
Here we list 5 fabulous reasons why France is the best country for food inspiration when it comes to your big day:
1 – Desserts
Patisseries, is there even an equivalent anywhere else in the world? I think not. Why would you not take inspiration from these pretty colourful windows lining the streets of France for your wedding menu? Rich creamy cakes, Sticky sickly tarts and more sweetness than I dare to say. Need I say more? I don’t want to give you cravings so I’ll end it there…..But yes, France does sweetness incredibly well, n’est-ce pas?
2 – Cheese
France has a crazy selection of cheeses that are incredibly diverse, with every region in France being home to its very own cheese it’s not surprising the choice is vast, to say the least. Made from cow’s milk, goat’s milk, ewe’s milk. Soft, hard, melt-in-your-mouth, you name it, France has got it cheese-wise and when almost every weekday food market has artisan dairy farmers selling their own handmade cheeses, there is undoubtedly something for everyone. Not sure whether to have a cheese board feature on the menu of your big day? France even has cheese tasting days out on offer especially to convert you.
3 – Bread
And I’m not talking the usual sliced bread nonsense we are all used to in our everyday supermarket. I mean French boulangerie bread in all shapes and sizes, tastes and flavours. Crusty and crunchy on the outside, tear it apart and it’s soft on the inside. You simply cannot get that kind of artisanal bread outside of France. Whether it’s taking centre stage on your menu or serving as an accompaniment to an amuse-bouche, it is sure to make an appearance on any French menu worth its salt.
4 – Wine
Wine and cheese, cheese and wine – in France they are inseparable.
As well as being home to the best cheese in the world, French wine is also considered rather special. In fact, in France, every other French person seems like a wine expert and with most of the international grape varieties having a French origin (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Chardonnay, etc.) it’s easy to see why. What we’re trying to say is that it is thanks to their cultivation in France that they became known and obviously, readily available for your wedding day tables.
5 – Apéritif
Quite possibly my favourite part of French food culture is the apéro. Sociable and a time to drink and eat varied nibbles and finger foods (a Kir is my go to should we ever meet in France). Often a pre-drink ahead of sitting down to a more formal dinner, why not take inspiration from the French way when greeting your guests to the all-important wedding breakfast.
Perhaps if one of your main reasons for getting hitched in France wasn’t the fabulous food on offer…I sure hope it is now! I mean, who would reject the food at French weddings?
